We have partnered with the local police department to enhance the security and safety of the District for all patrons, especially our most vulnerable, such as children, those with disabilities, and our senior groups.  Project plans are in development and underway.  We appreciate the feedback from the public and suggestions offered.  We can assure you that all these suggestions have already been under discussion.

In the first phase, we are increasing monitoring systems in the gym and walking track through updated surveillance and communication systems to the front desk staff in case of emergency. In addition, we will be working on configuring new memberships, which allow the District to monitor all individuals utilizing the recreation center, as outlined by Park District Codes and Laws.

Finally, we must ensure that the corridors in the Centennial Recreation Center, which house preschool and NEDSRA programming, is secured from non-program participant entry. These measures will directly impact the free walking track in the Centennial gym and the members of our community who use this amenity.  We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, as the Park Board and Staff did not take temporarily shutting down the Centennial Gym walking track lightly.

Due to the urgency of these much-needed proactive safety enhancements, we encourage the public’s patience while we ensure that we can provide this amenity in the future.  The Park District puts “safety always,” not just “safety first.” The track will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. The 6-month timeline is a broad estimate, as the project is too early in production to know for sure.  We will do our best to keep our patrons updated on our progress by creating an opt-in email distribution list with a plan to communicate once a month.  The intention of these emails is to provide transparency regarding when the track will re-open, as well as any new usage procedures that are put in place.
